Natural History of Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract

  • Chapter
Homeostasis, Nephrotoxicity, and Renal Anomalies in the Newborn

Abstract

Many times the pediatrician or the neonatologist is confronted with a newborn who is found to have a congenital anomaly of the kidney or the urinary tract. This clinical situation usually raises several questions. Among them are, what are the most common types of malformations? What is the usual outcome? Does an early diagnosis and intervention modify the outcome of these patients? And finally, what are the alternatives for management? It is difficult to discuss the natural history of these anomalies since most of them are modified by some type of procedure as soon as they are detected. Therefore, we shall focus here on the “unnatural” history of these congenital anomalies and various new methods of evaluation and management which have substantially modified their prognosis.
