In 1977, a protocol for the treatment of childhood non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, known as 77–04 was initiated at the Pediatric Branch of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), USA. The objective of this protocol was to provide information on prognostic factors in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in young people. At that time, data on this subject were scanty and, in general, results of therapy were extremely poor with few exceptions [1].
