Abstract

In 1970 the Intersociety Commission on Heart Diseases predicted that “coronary heart disease has reached enormous proportions … [and] will result in coming years in the greatest epidemic mankind has faced unless we are able to reverse the trend by concentrated research into its cause and prevention” [1]. The scientific community has indeed responded to this call, and although the main thrust of research into heart disease in the United States has been directed toward management of patients who already have coronary artery disease, an increasing amount of money is being allocated to preventive endeavors.
