Abstract

A good automation program calls for advanced manufacturing engineering with a wide range of talents to cooperate with and carry out the plans of the systems group. These talents are directed not toward the design of a product or to the supervision of workers who make it, but to the problem of how to make it. Those in manufacturing engineering must understand the product in all its ramifications, and its area of use, and must be dedicated to the attainment of lowest costs. They should be familiar with the possible processes. They should be able to integrate the product design and the manufacturing processes while recognizing the importance of the economics of manufacture. They should be represented on the systems group that determines the automation requirements.
