Incinerator Calculations

Incinerator calculations cannot be exact because of the nature of the materials normally incinerated. Almost by definition, waste is nonuniform in quality and will vary in composition from lot to lot. The measurement of waste characteristics is in itself a difficult, if not impossible task. How can a reliable determination of heating value be made for municipal solid waste for instance, when one sample may be over 90% cardboard with no metals while another sample contains plastic, glass, and metal containers? The heterogeneous nature of most waste streams lead to inaccuracies and uncertainties in too stringent an analysis.
