Abstract
The high cost of drilling (that is, direct sensing) has made seismic profiling (that is, remote sensing) the most important single tool in the exploration for oil and gas in the sedimentary basins of the Earth’s crust. Vast quantities of data are collected at the fraction of the cost of a single well. These digital data are subjected to computer processing in order to extract from them interpretable information of the sub-surface. At the very basic level, the processing yields an acoustic reflectivity map. Colour image processing can enhance geologically significant features such as rock type, porosity, age, lithology, fluid content and structure.
