Depolarized Interaction Induced Light Scattering Experiments in Argon, Krypton and Xenon

This paper will be devoted to review the latest experimental results of the Depolarized Interaction-Induced Light Scattering (DILS) and their interpretation in the noble gases argon, krypton, xenon. We restrict ourselves to these systems for two reasons: 1) because they can be interpreted in the framework of classical mechanics (quantum corrections for the interpretation of the spectra begin to be appreciable only for argon at high frequency, i. e. in the region of the fourth moment at room temperature and of the second moment near to the triple point (Barocchi et al., 1981 a; Barocchi et al., 1983)); 2) because the results which have been obtained by several groups (Frommhold et al., 1978; Barocchi and Zoppi, 1978 a; Barocchi and Zoppi, 1978 b; Shelton and Tabisz, 1980; Proffit et al., 1981; Barocchi et al., 1981 b, Zoppi et al., 1981) during the last few years have converged and are now widely accepted. Furthermore, they have been recently confirmed by experiments of a different nature, like depolarization ratio and Kerr-effect measurements (Dunmur et al., 1983).
