Growth and Differentiation of Neural Cells in Defined Media

  • Chapter
Cell Culture in the Neurosciences

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Neurobiology ((CTNB))

Abstract

The anatomical, physiological, and biochemical complexity of mammalian nervous systems is greater than that in other tissues and presents a formidable barrier to elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of these systems. Not only are there an abundance of complex cellular phenotypes, but the interactions of neural cells are exceedingly complex. One approach to this problem is to use culture methods in an attempt to simplify and control experimental variables.
