Ethics and Values in Risk Analysis: Introduction

  • Jeryl Mumpower
Part of the Advances in Risk Analysis book series (AEMB, volume 220)

Attempts to cope with risks from modern technological hazards run inescapably into thorny problems of ethics and values. These problems are broad in scope, ranging from fundamental questions of morality and justice, to questions of practical ethics and political theory, to questions concerning the proper role of the scientific enterprise in risk analysis and policymaking. Some of these problems are peculiarly endemic to risk analysis in the private sector, while others are generic to risk analysis in any setting.
