Origin and Fate Of IgE-Bearing Lymphocytes: Modulation of IgE Isotype Expression on Peyer’s Patch Cells

  • Chapter
Microenvironments in the Lymphoid System

Abstract

The absence of precursor B lymphocytes bearing membrane bound IgE (sIgE) from bone marrow (1,2) and Peyer’s patches of conventionally raised (C) adult rats, and the presence of high numbers of these cells in PP (2), but not bone marrow (2) of germ-free (GF) rats suggests that environmental antigens, such as bacteria, may play a role in “natural” regulation of IgE isotype expression. We have now succeeded in modulating IgE isotype expression on GF rat PP cells so that they resemble those of C rats. The data suggest that exposure to gut flora influenced these changes, either directly or through the mediation of sThy 1+ regulatory T cells (see 3,4).
