Effect of Early Embryonic Bursectomy on Lymphocyte Differentiation and Maturation

  • Chapter
Microenvironments in the Lymphoid System

Abstract

The hypothesis that the avian bursa of Fabricius is essential for the development of B lymphocytes has been questioned by studies in which the primordium of the bursa was removed from the embryo between 54 and 60 hr of development. Such early embryonically bursectomized chickens have been reported to develop B cells as well as serum immunoglobulins (Ig) (1–7). However, some controversy exists over the ability of these early embryonically bursectomized chickens to produce a humoral immune response (1, 3, 4, 7).
