Abstract
Rapid growth of urban populations has led to severe problems in the management of wastewaters. The International Drinking Water and Sanitation Decade (IDWSD) has drawn attention again to the problem of sanitation; according to WHO 1975 statistics, only 25% of urban populations is directly connected to a sewer system (Guest, 1979). To reach the goals set by 1990, an eight-fold increase is foreseen in investments for sanitary sewer systems (World Bank, 1980). This, along with an increasing concern for the environment, has already started a new drive for the design and construction of new and more efficient wastewater collection systems.
