Abstract

It is important, due to the frequent siting of industrial plant in such locations, to be able to predict diffusive conditions near shore-lines. An important feature of coastal meteorology is the presence of an internal boundary layer whenever an air flow crosses the coast line. The first quantitative attempt to describe internal boundary layer growth was given in the form of a nomogram by Prophet (1961) and reproduced by Van der Hoven (1967). Van der Hoven gives a graph based on the work of Prophet for determining the depth h of the mixing layer as a function of the initial over-water stability and over-land travel distance.
