Abstract

Recent advances in the chemotherapy of advanced testicular cancer and the availability of the specific serum tumor markers alfa-fetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) have made a dramatic improvement in the management of patients with non-seminomatous testicular cancer. Cis-platinum containing combination chemotherapy regimens have produced improved overall response rates in metastatic disease[1–15]. Over two-thirds of patients with Stage III disease can be expected to achieve a complete response to chemo-therapy. The relapse rate in these patients is rare, with over 90% of the relapses occurring in the first 2 years. Since the median follow-up in a number of reported series is greater than 2 years, it is likely that the majority of patients who achieve a complete response to chemotherapy are cured of their disease.
