Theoretical Status of Flavour Mixing Matrix

  • Chapter

Abstract

Horizontal symmetries and hints from grand unification can be used to restrict the fermion mass matrix. Relations between masses and mixing angles which are independent of the details of the Higgs part of the Lagrangian are obtained. A scheme is described in which very massive generations gradually decouple from very light ones and which shows maximal CP-violation. The corresponding quark mixing matrix is in accord with present experimental information. It also gives the observed magnitude of the CP-violating ε-parameter of K-decays within the uncertainties of the B-factor and long-range contributions. The mass of the top quark is obtained as a function of the mass of the strange quark. Lepton mixing angles are shortly discussed.
