The Reflex Effects of Cigarette Smoking

Abstract

Human beings smoke voluntarily whereas other animals do not. This paper will discuss the reflexes triggered by smoking, and a major part of it will concentrate on reflexes studied in animals. This may seem a perverse approach but it is so much easier to perform experiments to analyse respiratory reflexes in species other than man that these make a useful starting point when considering the effects of smoking in man. It is necessary, however, to exercise caution when extrapolating from results in animals to man, particularly because some of the experiments on the former have been performed using concentrations of cigarette smoke much higher than those that occur in the lungs of people who smoke.
