Silkworm Genetics and Chemical Mutagenesis
The domesticated silkworm (Bombyx mori L.), although not as frequently used as Drosophila for screening mutagenic substances, is also well suited for mutation studies, and the information obtained from such research could be applied to the sericultural industry. The most outstanding feature of silkworm genetics is the richness of genetic traits that manifest themselves at early developmental stages, such as the egg or newly hatched larva. This, in combination with the ease of egg collection, furnishes a great advantage in the detection of mutants and analysis of the mutants in the progeny.
In this paper, methods developed for mutation detection in the silkworm will be introduced, with comments in their merits and demerits, with special reference to their capabilty and specificity in mutation detection. For details, the reader may refer to my article (5).
