Abstract
One of the most important themes throughout this subject has been the hierarchical nature of macromolecular structure. Explanation or interpretation of any property must take congnizance of the existence of this hierarchy, which forms the main topic of the present summarizing survey. First, the members of the hierarchies will be briefly recapitulated.
