Abstract

Electroencephalographic studies of patients suffering from alcoholism have revealed, in over one thousand cases studied, a significant correlation between abnormal behavior patterns and electroencephalographic patterns. Some behavior patterns are continuous but many are episodic. Some are the product of long continued abuse of alcohol but many stem from the toxic effects of alcohol on previously damaged brains, either by trauma or other etiologic agents. Some, of course, are alcoholic withdrawal syndromes. Some result from the synergistic effect of alcohol and other agents, usually drugs.
