Pet-Investigation in Anorexia Nervosa: Preliminary Results

Abstract

Several studies (Enzmann and Lane, 1977; Heinz et al., 1977; Nussbaum et al., 1980; Sein et al., 1981), using conventional X-ray computer tomography, revealed a mainly reversible (in some rare cases not completely reversible (Kohlmeyer et al., 1983)) pseudo-atrophy of the brain in anorectic patients. This cerebral atrophy is characterized by very pronounced symmetrical enlargements of cortical sulci, which can be interpreted as an enlargement of the subarachnoid space (prominence of the insular cisterns and of the anterior interhemispheric fissure). The basic mechanism underlying these abnormalities is unknown. There is some parallelism toward changes characteristic in Cushing’s syndrome and in patients with severe malnutrition; protein loss and/or fluid retention are proposed to be responsible for these abnormalities (Heinz et al., 1977).
