About the Central Effect of Pirlindole, A New Antidepressant

  • Chapter
Psychiatry the State of the Art

Abstract

Pirlindole (PIR), a tetracyclic indole derivative, is a new antidepressant drug (AD) which inactivates monoamine oxidase and inhibits the uptake of noradrenaline (NA) (Mashkovsky et al., 1975; Martorana and Nitz, 1983). According to these properties PIR shows a pharmacological profile similar to that characteristic of typical AD, although some differences have been found.
