Abstract

Solomon Islands form part of a complex of Melanesian island arcs and marginal basins that extend in a southeasterly direction across the southwest Pacific from New Ireland, New Britain and Bougainville in Papua New Guinea, through Vanuatu and Fiji to Tonga and the Kermadec Islands (Fig. 1). This region has also been called the Melanesian Reentrant (Coleman, 1970) and the Melanesian Borderlands.
