Abstract

Social communication has already been briefly referred to in Chapter 1. The present chapter is concerned specifically with the use of different sensory modalities for conveying messages. Mammals generally employ some, or all, of four methods of communication, i.e. chemical, acoustic, visual and tactile. Each method has unique advantages and limitations which will be considered briefly before examining signalling in more detail.
