Abstract

Although orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is carried out in a few specialized centres, the numbers are incresing. In Groningen 50 liver transplantations have been done over the last five years. OLT requires the support of a considerable amount of blood and blood products [1,2]. The commitment of a regional Blood Bank to support an OLT programme means a 24 hours obligation for 7 days a week, since it is not known when the organ will be available for transplantation. Such an intense commitment should not adversely affect the routine care for other patients; in Groningen this means about 5,000 acute beds.
