Abstract
It is realized that the subjects of standards and quality assurance are not new. Some have had these activities for several years, but perhaps not all. It was stated at a meeting at the World Health Organization about five years ago that less than 25% of WHO member nations had any national standards or regulations pertaining to blood banking. Probably there has been some change in that figure because in most nations the numbers of patient care physicians has preogressively increased and most reporting nations are spending more money on health services based on WHO literature. So, it can be stated that regarding standards pertaining to blood banking it is “old hat” for some of us but futuristic for those in many nations.
