The objectives of the transfusion of a blood component are
  • — effectiveness: the long-standing correction of a temporary or chronic shortage;

  • — compatibility: no side effects; neither immediate nor in the long run;

  • — safety: no transfer of disease or factors causing reactions.

Effectiveness is achieved when the blood component is:
  • — the appropriate component;

  • — fresh;

  • — compatible.

Compatibility may be enhanced by:
  • — estimation of (in)compatibility by comparing patient and donor records;

  • — compatibility testing in the laboratory;

  • — removal of immunizing blood components.

Safety requirements:
  • — sterility;

  • — absence of disease-transmitting micro-organisms, as established by special treatment or the results of present and previous laboratory investigations.
