Abstract
The behaviour of the heart rate during 75 partial epilepsy seizures was studied in adult patients. Seizure occurrence and character were analyzed by combining the recording of the electrocerebral activity (scalp EEG in all cases; direct brain recording through stereotactically implanted electrodes in 5 patients) and the TV monitoring of the clinical manifestations.
The heart rate changed significantly during the majority of seizures (61.3 %). Tachycardia was much more frequent than bradycardia.
The heart rate change occurred after the beginning of the seizure in 54,5 % of cases (mean delay 3,4 seconds); it was coincident with it in 9,1 %. No strict relation between cerebral site of origin of the ictal discharge and occurrence and sign of the heart rate change was found.
The possibility that a change of the heart rate is directly dependent upon the paroxysmal discharge of the epileptized cerebral neurons is suggested by the above findings.
