Abstract

Anemia is the most common hematologic abnormality in patients with cancer. Anemia can be defined in several ways including: (1) decrease in red blood cell count, hemoglobin, or hematocrit (concentration measurements); (2) decrease in the red cell volume or Cr51 red cell mass. The mechanisms of cancer-related anemia are treated in detail in other reviews (1, 2).
