Abstract

The concept of continuous arteriovenous hemodialysis (CAVHD) was first suggested in 1960 by Scribner et al (1). Since then, various forms of continuous renal fluid replacement therapy such as continuous ambulator peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and continuous arteriovenous hemofiitration (CAVH) have been developed. As we will describe, the original concept of continuous hemodialysis may prove to be the treatment of choice for continuous therapy in the critically ill patient with renal failure.
