Regulation of Mammary Epithelial Cell Proliferation: An In Vitro Mouse Mammary Epithelial Cell Model System

  • Chapter
Breast Cancer: Origins, Detection, and Treatment

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 43))

Abstract

The fundamental challenge in cancer biology today is to understand the abnormal growth control of tumor cells. Undoubtedly, as recent work on cellular oncogenes has indicated (I), there can be multiple abnormalities in growth regulation. The complexity of abnormal growth regulation seems imposing but, perhaps, it will become less intimidating if normal growth control is better understood. It is probably true that an understanding of the variations in tumor growth control must rest upon a foundation built from sound knowledge of the growth regulation of normal cells.
