Summary

The principal pathologic variables of colorectal cancer prognosis are reviewed. The interrelationship of the three variables, namely, tumor stage, tumor grade, and tumor cell type, is emphasized. Survival prognosis is very much influenced by the histologic/cytologic characteristics of the tumor with greater importance being placed on tumor grade and the predominant cell type present in metastatic colon cancer. The criteria, definition, and examples of the histologic grade and cell types are presented. The potential implications of these pathologic characteristics to therapeutic modalities are hypothesized.
