Options in Uremia Therapy: Kidney Transplantation

Abstract

When evaluating a diabetic with kidney disease, it must be appreciated that in highly prevalent diseases such as diabetes (America has at least 10 million diabetics), any renal disorder likely to effect nondiabetics will also be encountered independently according to its frequency. An initial step in the assessment of a nephropathic diabetic becomes the distinction between diabetes-induced and nondiabetes-related kidney disease. The importance of this differentiation lies in the superior prognosis, and occasional reversibility, of nephropathy not caused by diabetes in a diabetic.
