The Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (Team) Study: Direct Measurement of Personal Exposures through Air and Water for 600 Residents of Several U.S. Cities

  • Chapter
Pollutants in a Multimedia Environment

Abstract

We are exposed daily to toxic or carcinogenic chemicals in our air, water, and food. However, the extent of our exposure is not known in many cases due to the lack of sufficiently sensitive measuring instruments (Wallace 1982) or to the lack of sufficiently extensive population exposure studies. Without knowing the extent of our exposure, governmental agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cannot quantify relative risks of different chemicals and thereby prioritize efforts to reduce public exposure, nor can the major sources of exposure be determined.
