Abstract
If one were asked which, of all the classes of biomaterials, were the most commonly used and had the longest and most extensive history of such use, few would fail to suggest dental materials as the answer. On the other hand when asked which class of biomaterials is associated with the greatest understanding from the biocompatability point of view, few would respond with that same category. Some of todays dental materials had their origins 100–150 years ago but we have a very limited perspective on their interactions with the oral tissues.
