Abstract
Locomotion of plasmodia of up to several m2 in size and with a thickness of several mm is by migration of up to 1 cm/hr, even under conditions of starvation for many days. The basis of this considerable mass transport are the oscillating contractile movements of the plasmodial strands, namely, of their ectoplasmic tubes, which contain the force-generating cytoplasmic actomyosin fibrils. Plasmodial strands with a length of more than 5 cm can be isolated from the plasmodium and measured tensiometrically with respect to their longitudinal contractile activities.
