Gene Expression During Plasmodial Differentiation

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 106))

Abstract

The intent of this chapter is to define the present position of research on plasmodial differentiation in Physarum and to discuss the potential of this model organism to contribute to an understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying development. The literature accumulated in the last 10 years of Physarum research has been reviewed recently by several authors (Gorman and Wilkins, 1980; Raub and Aldrich, 1982; Sauer, 1982); therefore, in this chapter, we will present mainly novel, unpublished data. We will focus on results that, in our opinion, provide a basis to investigate biological differentiation at the gene level, using Physarum as a model.
