Degradation of AA-Amyloid, Clinical Experience: An Introduction
The Fourth Department of Medicine in Helsinki has beside general internal medicine the responsibility for rheumatology and nephrology. Patients with rare disorders like amyloidosis and patients waiting for kidney transplantation are remitted to this department from the whole country. An accumulation of amyloid diseased patients demands efforts of both research and treatment. The frequency of amyloidosis in rheumatic patients at this university department is strikingly higher than in Rheumatism Foundation Hospital in Heinola. The prognosis of reactive amyloidosis among rheumatic patients is known to be poor. The Finnish material reported by us at the meeting in Portugal showed the same. In a cumulative survival study only a few patients survived over 15 years. These few patients with good prognosis might give a clue about the beneficial forces responsible for regression of the disease. Discovery of these mechanisms could lead us to a successful treatment.
