Abstract

Experiential (episodic) data constitute the major components of conscious awareness and in general contribute the most important influences that shape personality. They always carry emotional charge (positive, negative, or neutral), and no discussion of their processing would be complete without a consideration of the influences of such charges. Mechanical and semantic operations are also strongly influenced by motivational—emotional forces (e.g., the effects of stress on stuttering). However, at this time, we shall restrict ourselves to a discussion of the effects of emotionality on episodic material; in Chapter 17 we shall consider the effects of stress on procedural processing.
