Abstract

A typical C compilation begins with a preliminary step during which a program within the compiler, known as the preprocessor, makes a pass over the entire set of source files. During this pass, the preprocessor modifies the source program’s text, at appropriate points, to make it ready for compilation. These modifications principally consist of source text insertions. We will study here the rules by which the preprocessor operates.
