Proton-Impact Excitation of the 2p-Shell of Sodium Atoms

Abstract

We consider the scattering process

$$ \begin{array}{*{20}{c}} {p + Na\left( {2{p^6}3{s^2}S} \right)\mathop { \to p + Na*\left( {2{p^5}3{s^2}{}^2p} \right)}\limits^I }\\ { \downarrow II}\\ {p + N{a^ + }\left( {2{p^6}{}^1S} \right) + {e^ - }} \end{array} $$

for which the total cross-section¹ and alignment parameter^2,3 have been measured.The angular distribution of autoionization electrons of the decay process II in the above reaction is described by

$$ I\left( {\theta \,} \right) = {I_o}\left\{ {1 + {A_2}{P_2}\left( {cos\,\theta \,} \right)} \right\} $$
