Abstract

In contrast to coronary artery disease, the incidence of congestive heart failure appears to be increasing in North America. In the United States, the number of discharges from hospital with this diagnosis has increased almost 300% from 570,000 to 1,557,000 between 1970 and 1982; over 2,000,000 outpatients suffer from this disorder (1). The prognosis for these patients is terrible. The Framingham study demonstrated 24 and 48-month mortalities of 31% and 52% respectively (2). In patients who remained symptomatic in spite of digitalis and diuretics, one year mortality is approximately 50%; one half of these deaths are sudden (Reviewed in 3,4).
