Subcellular Growth of Cardiocytes during Hypertrophy

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine ((DICM,volume 62))

Abstract

Cardiac enlargement is a biological adaptation which occurs in response to stress. Since hyperplasia of cardiac myocytes (cardiocytes) is limited to the neonatal period, cardiac enlargement in response to increased work or metabolism occurs as a consequence of myocyte hypertrophy [1]. While a variety of stimuli may elicit cardiac hypertrophy, the subcellular growth and architectural reorganization which occur are affected by a variety of factors: the stimulus itself (e. g., volume or pressure overload), the rate of onset (rapid or gradual), age, and the duration and severity of the overload. Thus, cardiac hypertrophies of different origins may differ considerably with regard to their degree of usefulness and liability [2].
