IgA Nephropathy in Children

IgA Nephropathy

Part of the book series: Topics in Renal Medicine ((TIRM,volume 2))

Abstract

Reports of IgA nephropathy in children were relatively uncommon prior to 1980 with only one center reporting more than ten patients [1], The situation has changed dramatically since that time, however, with at least one large pediatric series (and usually more) being reported in each of the last six years. These reports have shown that IgA nephropathy is a very common form of glomerular disease in Japan [26], where it is most often diagnosed following routine urinalysis. Although the disorder appears to be diagnosed less frequently in other parts of the world, there are now many reports implicating IgA nephropathy as an important cause of childhood renal disease in Australia [7, 8], Europe [9–18], and the United States [19–30].
