Clinical and Laboratory Features of IgA Nephropathy

IgA Nephropathy

Part of the book series: Topics in Renal Medicine ((TIRM,volume 2))

Abstract

Most clinical features of IgA nephropathy point to a renal problem although it is important to recognize that, on occasions, systemic features may be sufficiently severe to mask a renal presentation. From the nephrologic point of view, the features are diverse. Patients with biopsy-proved IgA nephropathy have been presented to medical attention with nephrotic syndrome, acute nephritis, acute renal failure, malignant hypertension, and chronic renal failure as well as the more frequent recurrent “synpharyngitic” macroscopic hematuria and asymptomatic microscopic hematuria and proteinuria. In our experience, the only reliable symptom pointing to the diagnosis is “synpharyngitic” hematuria although it is pertinent that other forms of glomerulonephritis may behave similarly.
