Anesthesia for Renal Transplantation

Part of the book series: Developments in Critical Care Medicine and Anesthesiology ((DCCA,volume 14))

Abstract

When children with chronic renal failure present for renal transplantation, the anesthetic challenges extend beyond the classic anesthetic triad of hypnosis, analgesia, and relaxation. The underlying alterations in physiology and psychology serve as the basis for anesthetic drug choices and monitoring in the operating room. A review of our experience with 184 renal transplant patients at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, over a 20-year period will illustrate the variety of safe anesthetic choices. Our goal is to outline a broad anesthetic plan which anticipates problems and avoids complications for these pediatric patients.
