Abstract
The safe shipping of hazardous materials over the transportation systems of this country long has been deemed a requirement in the public interest and hence a concern of governmental agencies, of shippers and of transportation people. A wide variety of new chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, gasses and radioactive products in commercial quantities are being transported long distances in railroad cars, motor vehicles and ships of greatly expanded size and capacity. The Department of Transportation has been made responsible for the federal regulations covering the packing, labeling and shipping of such materials.
