The Pregenital Phases of Psychosexual Development
The expression that “it all depends on how you look at it” captures the universal observation that a given stimulus can be perceived in different ways depending upon the attitude of the observer. It also embodies the idea that a given stimulus can be perceived in different ways simultaneously. How does this complicated act of perception take place? What is at the foundation of a capacity to perceive a differing stimulus and simultaneously the same stimulus in differing ways? The continuity of conscious to preconscious to unconscious mental activity is also dependent upon an act of perception that is occurring with differing qualities in differing sectors of the personality. It is thus important to define a developmental line of perceptual functioning that can trace the evolution of these complicated perceptual tasks.
