A Simple Method for HbF Analysis

Abstract

It has been discussed by several authors1–4 that oxygen saturation (SO2) determined by CO-oxymeters are affected by fetal hemoglobin (HbF). This artefact depends on the wavelengths used to collect absorbance data and/ or the extinction coefficients used to calculate the hemoglobin derivatives. Increased HbF and oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) in human blood elevate the carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) percentage and cause falsely underestimated SO2 values.
