Abstract
The exact gestational age of a new device is often difficult to establish. The European commercial birth date of the transcutaneous oxygen electrode is 1972. It did not appear in the United States, however, until 1978. The growth and development of this device in the United States has been a spectacular success. One index of growth has been the number of articles written on the subject which rose from none in 1970 to over 110 in English alone in 1986, with well over a total of 300 articles since 1972.
