Abstract
Langmuir-Blodgett films have become increasingly popular for a number of potential applications because uniform and regularly spaced films of known thicknesses can be constructed with functional groups contained either in the chain at one end or as a side group. In order to determine the molecular structure and orientation, we have used a number of spectroscopic techniques, such as infrared glancing angle reflection and transmission spectroscopy. Changes in the IR spectra with temperature have given evidence for a two step melting process involving the gradual disordering of the hydrocarbon tail followed by the breakup of the head group lattice. With the polymerization of films of either octadecyl fumarate or octadecyl maleate, the vibrational bands associated with the unsaturation disappear and others increase, attributable to the resulting polymer. Initiation by both uv radiation and thermal heating led to similar spectra for both compounds indicating, as expected, that the same product is formed. Our spectral results from some examples will be presented in addition to the details of the experimental method.
